MUCH, MANY, A LOT (OF)

THÉORIE

Les quantifieurs "MUCH" et "MANY" sont utilisés pour parler de quantités et de montants :

✶ "MUCH" est utilisé avec une quantité indénombrable au singulier : much time.
✶ "MANY" est utilisé avec une quantité dénombrable au pluriel : many children.

Remarques :

👉 "MUCH" et "MANY" s'emploient principalement dans les phrases négatives et interrogatives ("A LOT (OF)" est cependant aussi possible, mais moins courant.) :

➼ dans les phrases négatives, pour insister sur le fait que nous parlons de quantités ou de montants :
• We didn't spend MUCH money. (ou "We didn't spend a lot of money.")
• I don't go out MUCH. (ou "I don't go out a lot.")

➼ dans des phrases interrogatives, pour interroger à propos de quantités ou de montants :
• Do you know MANY people? (ou "Do you know a lot of people?")
• Have you got MUCH homework to do tonight? (ou "Have you got a lot of homework ...?")
• How MANY questions could you answer in this test?

👉 Dans les phrases affirmatives, "A LOT (OF)" est plus courant en anglais parlé que "MUCH" ou "MANY", sauf après "too".
• We spent a lot of money. (non pas "We spent much money.")
• He goes out a lot. (non pas "He goes out much.")
• a lot of people (ou "Many people") drive too fast.
• We spent too much money (sing.). - I made too many mistakes (plur.).
